This online edition of The Last Forest curriculum guide is ready for you to use in your classroom. We hope that these radio shows, stories, and accompanying materials entertain, educate, and inspire your students as you introduce them to an important period in West Virginia History.

You may also order a hard copy of the guide, as well as The Last Forest itself and the 3-disc audio edition produced Larry Groce, of Public Radio’s “Mountain Stage."

Welcome to The Last Forest

We are delighted to be able to make The Last Forest: Tales of the Allegheny Woods available to you and your students. In addition to providing creative new ways to teach the traditional Three R’s and other subjects, the curriculum guide is designed to provide teachers of grades 6 through 10 with the tools necessary to acquaint their students with an important piece of Appalachian literature - one that contains valuable lessons on environmental stewardship and the preservation of our communities and heritage.

Inside you will find:

  • The Last Forest curriculum guide, which includes the text of five selected stories from the book, activities, photographs, documents, maps, and other primary sources chosen to make history come alive for you and your students.
  • Five radio plays adapted from the five stories. These radio plays are broken into short segments to facilitate classroom discussion. Teachers may want to use this audio material to introduce the units.
If you haven't already registered, you are welcome to test drive the course.
Of course, registering allows you to take advantage of all the features of the course and to post your own thoughts and materials in the forums.

Available Courses

  • This curriculum guide is based on The Last Forest by G.D. McNeill. Divided into five units, the guide includes multimedia lessons for use in fine arts, internet research skills, language arts, outdoor education, science and social studies.
